Pterostyrax - Epaulette Tree, Wisteria Tree

(Ptero'syrax)

DESCRIPTION: The deciduous trees or large shrubs are native to China and Japan. P. hispida, commonly known as the Epaulette Tree or Wisteria Tree, can be grown as a bush with a height of up to 12 feet or a tree, growing up to 50 feet high. The Epaulette Tree is covered in oblong leaves up to 8 inches in length. These trees begin to blossom when they are 8 to 10 feet high. In early summer, fragrant, creamy white flowers are borne in suspended clusters 4 to 9 inches long. These are followed by fuzzy seedpods that persist on the branches well into the winter.

POTTING: These trees grow in climates having not too harsh winters. They need full sun and moist, well-drained soil. Trees that are bought balled and burlapped should be planted in the spring. Pruning should be done in the winter. This consists of removing low side branches.

PROPAGATION: Seeds may be sown or the branches may be layered.

VARIETIES: P. hispida; P. corymbosa (less hardy than the other kind).
