PHLOMIS
(Phlo'mis)
DESCRIPTION: These perennials (Jerusalem Sage) are natives of Turkey, North Africa, Europe and Asia. P. russeliana forms mounds, 3 feet high, of coarse, sage-green, hairy leaves that are broadly oval and heart-shaped at the base. The hooded, tubular, 2-lipped, light creamy yellow flowers are borne in whorls on stout stems, in the summer. This plant forms an excellent weed-smothering ground cover. The dried flower stems make pretty winter decorations.
POTTING: Grow these plants in somewhat fertile soil that has good drainage, in full sun. These plants may self-sow, so remove the flowers as soon as they've faded if seeds are not wanted.
PROPAGATION: These plants may be divided in the spring, or seeds may be sown in light soil, in the fall. Cuttings may also be inserted in a closed frame in late summer.
