MOLTKIA (Molt'kia)

DESCRIPTION: These perennials are grown for their pretty flowers. They are natives of Europe, Albania and Asia. M. doerfleri grows up to 20 inches high with a spread of 10 inches. Its bright green leaves are small and lance-shaped and covered in tiny bristles, which are pressed closely against the surface. In early summer, terminal clusters are produced consisting of a few, small, tubular to funnel-shaped, purplish-pink flowers. M. petraea is a shrubby variety with dark green foliage and heads of bright blue flowers in early summer. This kind grows 1 to 2 feet high.

POTTING: These plants need very well-drained soil in a warm, sheltered position, in full sun.

PROPAGATION: Seeds can be sown in the fall or cuttings may be taken with a "heel" in early summer. Layering may also be done in July.

VARIETIES: M. suffruticosa; M. intermedia; M. petraea; M. doerfleri.
