Ipheion - Spring Starflower

DESCRIPTION: This is a small group of bulbs native to South America. They are great to use as ground covers in moist, shaded sites or as an edging in beds and borders. These plants produce their star-shaped, pale blue, dark blue or white flowers mainly in the spring and intermittently throughout the year. The long, slender leaves of these plants smell of onion when crushed. I. uniflorum (Spring Starflower) is a hardy plant that grows from 4 to 8 inches high. In the spring, it bears white and blue flowers.

POTTING: Grow these plants in a sunny or partially shaded area in moist, but well-drained, garden soil. If they become overcrowded and begin to suffer, they may need to be lifted and divided.

PROPAGATION: The bulbs may be lifted and separated.

VARIETIES: I. uniflorum & var. Roff Fiedler, Alberto Castillo, Froyle Mill.
