Eccremocarpus - Chilean Glory Flower
(Eccremocar'pus)
DESCRIPTION: This group consists of about five tender, evergreen, climbing plants from Chile. E. scaber (Chilean Glory Flower) is a climbing plant that quickly grows up to 16 feet long. Its stems are covered with bipinnate leaves that end in a slender, coiling tendril, which allows the plant to climb. The tube-shaped, 1-inch flowers are scarlet to orange or yellow. They are borne in clusters continually throughout the summer and fall.
POTTING: The Chilean Glory Flower can be grown outdoors in mild climates only. In cold climates, they may be grown in greenhouses, or outdoors treated as annuals. This plant will grow in any soil, though the best is well-drained, loamy soil. The loose, upper shoots may be pruned back in the fall and spring as far as may be necessary.
PROPAGATION: Seeds may be sown in the spring, in a warm greenhouse. These plants will flower in the same season in which they were sown.
VARIETIES: E. scaber.
