DESCRIPTION: This group consists of only one deciduous shrub native to Japan. D. cercidifolius is an attractive shrub that can reach a height from 8 to 12 feet. Its rounded to broadly heart-shaped leaves turn brilliant fall colors of crimson and orange. Unnoticeable purplish flowers are produced in pairs from the leaf axils, in mid-fall.
POTTING: Grow this plant in moist, well-drained, acidic soil, in a partially shaded location that is sheltered from strong wind. Pruning isn't required, unless a branch needs to be trimmed to maintain a nice shape.
PROPAGATION: Seeds may be sown in pots of sandy soil in a cold frame or greenhouse, or the lower branches may be layered.
VARIETIES: D. cercidifolius.
