Cyanotis - Pussy Ears

(Cyano'tis)

DESCRIPTION: The origin of this creeping, tender perennial is uncertain, but it is probably Somalia. Its fleshy, narrowly oblong leaves are glossy dark green and covered with soft white hairs. It produces small, 3-petaled, purple or blue flowers in the axils of the leaves in the winter and spring. Cyanotis, also called Pussy Ears, grows about 2 inches high and will spread continuously.

POTTING: Pussy Ears need to be grown indoors where climates are cool. It should be planted in fertile, well-drained soil. Water thoroughly and let dry between waterings, but not too long or the little leaves will turn brown. It needs less water in the winter.

PROPAGATION: This plant can easily be reproduced by tip cuttings from spring to fall.

VARIETIES: C. somaliensis.
