Cephalanthus - Buttonbush

DESCRIPTION: This group consists of about six evergreen and deciduous trees and shrubs from North and Central America, Africa, and eastern Asia. C. occidentalis, the Buttonbush, is a medium-sized, deciduous shrub that is easily, but rarely, grown. The Buttonbush is covered with ovate-shaped leaves that grow from 2 to 6 inches long. Its creamy white, fragrantflowers are borne in small, round heads, in late summer.
POTTING: Grow the Buttonbush in moist, fertile soil in an open area.
PROPAGATION: Seeds may be sown in the fall, in a cold frame. Cuttings of ripe wood may be taken in the fall, or of green, leafy shoots in the summer.
VARIETIES: C. occidentalis.
