Carissa - Hedge Thorn, Karanda, Natal Plum

DESCRIPTION: These are tropical shrubs, natives of Africa, Australia and Asia. Some of them are grown outdoors in Florida and California. They have dark green, shiny leaves and bear fragrant white or pink flowers that are sometimes followed by edible fruits resembling plums. These plants are spiny and are great hedge plants.
POTTING: These plants grow well in any soil. They enjoy bright light and even moisture.
PROPAGATION: Seeds and cuttings of ripe wood are used to start new plants.
VARIETIES: Arduina (Hedge Thorn) white flowers and red fruit; Carandas (Karanda) shrub or small tree, white or pink flowers, fruits change from red to black; grandiflora (Natal Plum) white, fragrant flowers, scarlet fruits.
