Brownea

DESCRIPTION: The tropical plants are native to South America. They are related to the Pea family, Leguminosae. In their native land, Browneas can grow 20-40 feet high. They have evergreen, pinnate leaves and large, terminal heads of bright pink or scarlet flowers. They may be grown outdoors in southern Florida.
POTTING: These plants are grown in large pots or tubs filled with equal parts of peat and loam with sand added. The required, minimum temperature is 55 degrees. Repotting should be done in March. For a few weeks after repotting, water sparingly. During the winter, very little water is needed.
PROPAGATION: Cuttings can be inserted in pots of sandy peat in April.
