Billardiera

(Billardier'a)

DESCRIPTION: This group consists of about eight, tender, low-growing, climbing plants that are natives to Tasmania and Australia. B. longiflora is a pretty plant that grows up to 6 feet high. The slender stems are clothed with lance-shaped, evergreen leaves. Greenish-yellow, bell-shaped flowers are produced singly, in the summer and autumn. These pendent blossoms are followed by dark blue, oblong fruits that are up to an inch long.

POTTING: This plant can be grown outdoors in warm, tropical climates, in a sunny location. They may also be grown in a greenhouse having a minimum temperature of 50º F. Large tubs or pots should be filled with equal parts of loam and leaf mold. The long shoots should be trained on wires.

PROPAGATION: Cuttings of young shoots can be planted in pots of sandy soil and placed under a bell jar in the greenhouse, in spring.

VARIETIES: B. longiflora.
