Azolla - Fairy Moss
(Azol'la)
DESCRIPTION: This tiny, floating, aquatic plant, commonly known as Fairy Moss, is a native of tropical and North America. It has small, plump, pinnately branched, bright-green leaves, which resemble little Fern fronds. These become tinted with bronze in full sun and in the fall. Thin roots trail below these miniature leaves.
POTTING: These plants are simply set on the surface of the water. They will spread quickly. In some places they have become a nuisance, however, this rarely happens in the water garden. To assure success the following year, winter some in an indoor aquarium or shallow pan of well-lighted water.
PROPAGATION: They will increase through natural division.
VARIETIES: A. caroliniana.
