Azara - Oromo
(Aza'ra)
DESCRIPTION: This group consists of tender, evergreen shrubs or small trees that are natives of Argentina and Chile. A. microphylla is a small tree with sprays of small, lustrous, dark green leaves. In early spring, tiny, yellow, vanilla-scented flowers are produced on the undersides of the twigs. The twigs of foliage are suitable for indoor decoration and last well in water. A. serrata is a large shrub with upright growth. It has oval, glossy, serrated leaves and clusters of pretty orange-yellow flowers, in mid-summer. The flowers look fluffy since they consist mostly of stamens. They are followed by white berries after a hot summer.
POTTING: These plants can be grown in mild climates only. They should be grown in light garden soil. If the soil is heavy, an addition of compost or peat should be mixed in at the time they are planted.
PROPAGATION: Cuttings can be taken in the summer. Once they've formed roots, they should be transferred to small pots and placed in a frame for the winter. They may be planted outdoors in the spring.
VARIETIES: A. intgrifolia & var. Variegata; A. lanceolata; A. microphylla & var. Variegata; A. serrata.
