Alisma - Water Plantain

DESCRIPTION: This is a group of hardy aquatic plants. The most popular is A. plantago-aquatica, the Water Plantain. This plant grows 2 or 3 feet high and flourishes in shallow water, though it will grow in water up to 18 inches deep. It produces rosettes of long-stalked, rounded to heart-shaped leaves. In June and July, panicles of pinkish-white flowers are borne. Care must be taken in controlling the growth of this plant as it can become a nuisance. The flowers of the Water Plantain may be dried upside down in a cool, dark room and used in arrangements.

POTTING: The Water Plantain can be grown in loamy soil under water, in sun or partial shade. Plant them in the spring or fall. This plant may be susceptible to aphids.

PROPAGATION: Divide this plant in the spring or fall or sow seeds in flowerpots filled with loamy soil and set under water.
