SOOTY MOLD: This is caused by a soilborne fungus. It attacks plants, especially seedlings, that are weakened by too wet conditions, or covered in honeydew (a pest excretion). Get rid of infected soil and seedlings, treat plants with a systemic fungicide, and control any pests present.

SOW BUG: A small crustacean that is very similar to a pill bug, except it doesn't roll into a ball when disturbed. To discourage these pests, clean up organic mater and let soil dry out.
