FEMALE:A plant that produces fruit; the plant that bears the pistil and receives the pollen or fertilizing element of the male plant, or the analagous organ in cryptogams. Pertaining to the kind of plants that produce fruit; pistil bearing; pistillate; producing pistillate flowers.
FERNERY: A place where ferns are growing, often in a greenhouse; a plantation of ferns.
FERRIC IRON: An oxidized or high-volence form of iron.
FERROUS IRON: A reduced or low-volence form or iron.
FERRUGINOUS: Rust-colored.
FERTILE: 1. Producing abundantly; capable of sustaining abundant growth, as fertile soil. 2. Capable of producing fruit; having a functional pistil, bearing functional pollen, etc. 3. Capable of fertilizing, as an anther with well-developed pollen.
FERTILITY: The quality of soil that enables it to provide compounds in adequate amounts and in proper balance for the growth of specified plants.
FERTILIZATION: 1. The act of rendering land fruitful or productive; the application of fertilizer. 2. The process by which pollen reaches the ovules and assures the production of fruit; also, the analogous process in cryptogams.
FERTILIZER: A natural or man-made material added to soil to supply nutrients to plants.
FERTILIZER GRADE: An expression that indicates the percentage of plant nutrients in a fertilizer.
FERTILIZER INJECTOR: A device connected to the faucet end of a garden hose; it contains about a pint of liquid or water soluble fertilizer and mixes it at a predetermined rate with water flowing through the hose.
