CHAFF: The glumes, husks, or other pieces of the leaves and stems of wheat, oats, or other grains and grasses, especially when separated from the seed by threshing and winnowing.

CHALAZA: The part of the ovule where the seed stalk and the outer coverings attach to each other.

CHANNELED: Hollowed out; trough-like; applied to petioles, leaves, etc.

CHELATES: A chemical compound that combines a metallic atom with a molecule using multiple chemical bonds.

CHEMICAL DRENCHES: Can be used to control soil-borne disease.

CHEMICAL GARDENING: A method of cultivating plants in which chemicals are used to control undesirable pests or weeds.

CHERT: A structureless form of silica.

CHESTNUT SOIL: Dark brown surface soil.

CHICKEN MANURE: Strong organic fertilizer derived from chicken droppings. Also called hen manure.

CHIMERA: A plant consisting of two or more genetically distinct tissues or an artificially produced plant having tissues of several species.

CHIPPER: A tool made of a chute, blades and an electric or gas motor; used for turning branches into wood chips.

CHITIN: A natural pesticide made from pulverized crustacean shells. This is added to the soil to increase the feeding of soil organisms on nematode eggs, which helps control these pests.

CHLOROPHYLL: The green coloring matter of plants, which is necessary to photosynthesis.

CHLOROTHALONIL: A multi-purpose fungicide used to treat a variety of plant diseases. Commonly known as Daconil.

CHORIPETALOUS: Having the petals unconnected.

CHORISIS: The multiplication, by congenital division during development, of a leaf or floral organ that is normally whole.

CHROMOSOMES: The bodies that contain the essential material of genetic coding.
